How to Cook Perfect White Basmati Rice On the Stove
Here's how to cook perfect basmati rice the easy way, it is fluffy and light. Once you've mastered all of the steps (rinsing, simmering, fluffing, and resting), you can adapt one or more of them to create delicious, endless variations.
Add the rice to a bowl and fill with cold water. Using your fingertips, swirl the grains. Remove any starchy water with a strainer and repeat until the water is almost clear.
Combine rice and water in a pot: 1 cup rice and 1 1/2 cup water for most long-grain and medium-grain rice. The rice and water should only come halfway up the sides of your pot; as it cooks, the mixture will double in volume.
Bring the water and rice to boil on medium-high heat without the lid. When the entire surface of the water starts to boil, bubbly and foamy, stir it with a spatula or wooden spoon, scraping the bottom of the pot for any grains. Cover it with a lid and turn the heat to low. Make sure to put a timer and cook for 15 minutes.
When the 15-minute timer is passed, turn off heat and remove it from the stove, and let rice rest for around 10 to 15 minutes before serving.
Fluff the rice and serve.
