Red Currant
Red currents are pretty, bright red, juicy edible berries that grow in the cool climate of the US and Canada, also some parts of Western Europe and Asia. They produce blooms in spring and berries in summer. The berries dangle like bunches of grapes with sparkling color and it’s gorgeous!!
Even though they are tiny in size, currants are packed with nutrition. They are a good source of vitamin C, fiber and K, manganese, and potassium, 1 cup of fresh currants contains about 63 calories and 15 gms of carbohydrate.
Red Currants can be harvested in summer when the fruits are soft and juicy. You can freeze them after harvesting and use them later.
It has a bright sour kick to balance out its sweetness that can make your mouth juicy. I think they’re a bit tart for fresh eating but they can transform into sweet when made into Jelly and Jam.
The red currant plant is bushy and it looks very nice and fits in any garden.
Currants are commonly preserved in jellies and jams, and can also be dried using a food dehydrator.
Baked goods, Desserts, jams, jellies and sauces are the most common recipes to feature currants.
